Planning to pursue a Master’s degree in Germany? There is an important update that every Indian student should know. The Digital Master Test (dMAT) has been introduced as an additional requirement for selected Master’s applicants from India. If you’re planning to study in Germany, understanding the dMAT process is essential for a smooth application journey.
What is the Digital Master Test (dMAT)?
The Digital Master Test (dMAT) is a standardized academic aptitude test introduced for selected Indian students applying for Master’s programs in Germany. It supports the existing APS (Academic Evaluation Centre) verification process by helping assess applicants’ academic preparedness. The dMAT is being implemented in phases, initially covering specific academic disciplines.
Who Needs to Take the dMAT?
The dMAT is required for students applying for Summer Semester 2027 and future intakes if their previous degree is in one of the following fields:
- Engineering
- Commerce
- Accounting
- Finance
- Economics
- Business
- Management
If your academic background falls under these disciplines, you should check whether the dMAT applies to your application.
Who is Exempt from the dMAT?
You do not need to take the dMAT if you:
- Completed APS online registration before 29 June 2026
- Submitted your complete APS application before 29 June 2026
- Already have an APS Certificate
- Are applying for a Bachelor’s or PhD program
- Hold a degree outside the specified academic fields
- Are participating in an approved exchange or double-degree program

Where Can You Take the dMAT?
The Digital Master Test will be conducted in several major Indian cities, including:
- Ahmedabad
- Bengaluru
- Bhopal
- Chandigarh
- Chennai
- Kolkata
- Mananthavady
- Mumbai
- New Delhi
- Pune
Students are encouraged to register early, as seats at test centres may be limited.
dMAT Registration Fee
The test is administered by g.a.s.t. (Society for Academic Study Preparation and Test Development) and not by APS India.
Registration Fee: €150
Does the dMAT Replace the APS Certificate?
No.
The dMAT is an additional requirement and does not replace the APS verification process.
Students may submit their APS documents before receiving their dMAT certificate, but APS India will complete the verification only after the dMAT certificate is submitted.
Does a Low dMAT Score Mean Rejection?
No.
A low dMAT score does not automatically disqualify an applicant from receiving an APS certificate. Likewise, passing the dMAT does not guarantee admission to a German university. Final admission decisions remain with individual universities.
