The Cyber Security graduate certificate program at George brown College is designed to meet the high demand for cyber security professionals and related IT security professionals across multiple sectors – including consulting services, finance and health care.
Students begin with learning the theory and practical skills required to become a cyber security professional, including the differences and similarities between cyber security and hacking. A holistic approach is used, with students learning about the primary attack surfaces (physical, social, electronic). Students will learn about methods for compromising the attack surfaces, and how to mitigate potential attacks.
In the third semester, students will learn advanced techniques in ethical hacking incident response. A capstone group project will provide students with an opportunity to showcase their skills and talents for potential employers. These skills include:
- digital forensics and incident response management
- ethical hacking and analyzing malware
- delivering security training
- applying cryptography
In addition to traditional technical skills, the cyber security professionals of today require many non-technical skills and talents, such as:
- analytical skills
- written and verbal communication
- project and time management skills
- interpersonal and conflict management skills
Students graduating from this program are prepared to help defend organizations from the many cyber threats, including malware, network attacks and data compromise. They will have the capabilities to monitor, assess and evaluate security risks and threats to physical and digital infrastructure, develop and implement security contingency planning, and lead the development of policies and procedures to ensure the mitigation of security risks.
Entry requirement
Postsecondary programs (Certificates, Diplomas and Degrees)
The minimum requirement for admission to postsecondary programs is an Ontario Secondary School Diploma, or the equivalent, or Mature Student status (see details below on Mature Students). *
Bachelor's degree programs require a minimum of six Grade 12 credits at the university and/or university/college level.*
Postgraduate programs (Ontario Graduate Certificate) typically require a minimum of a college diploma, university degree or equivalent. Additional requirements may be required. *
Admission Requirements Overview
- Meeting the minimum admission requirements does not guarantee admission to a program.
- Applicants are ranked on their academics (including additional program requirements where applicable). Offers are released based on program competition and seat availably. Applicants must meet a minimum standard set by the college, which varies by program.
- This standard ensures that students have a chance of academic success while attending George Brown College.
- Grade and/or course requirements are used in the selection processes for all programs.
- If applicants are enrolled in Grade 12 required subjects (as indicated under each program), in the second semester, Grade 11 marks will be considered.
- If the applicant attended secondary school in another province or country, he or she must prove that his or her educational standing is equivalent to the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).
- Domestic applicants who have International transcripts must have them evaluated. For certificate, diploma, and degree programs we recommend a comprehensive evaluation. For postgraduate programs we recommend a general evaluation. The Admissions Office will accept evaluations from the International Credential Assessment Service of Canada (ICAS) or World Education Services (WES) Please note, WES does not do International high school course-by-course evaluations. This must be done through ICAS.
- Admissions applications and decisions are not deferrable. A new application must be submitted for each new academic and ranked with competition for the intake.
